CHOICE’s Expedition Program is a social enterprise that facilitates in-country seminars and volunteer humanitarian expeditions with over 20 community-managed projects in all 7 countries each year. In 2017 nearly 700 participants, including families, friends, adventure travelers, donors, and corporate partners, went out to have a transparent exposure to the work we do, to learn from community leaders, to support a phase of a project communities are managing, and to better understand, together with community members, what it means to be equal global citizens. Expeditions are an organic mix of humanitarian service, learning, and intercultural exchange. The experience is rough, tiring, educating, adventurous, life-changing, and sustainable. Our expedition program not only funds the projects each trip supports but also hundreds of other community-led projects across the globe.

CHOICE does not do development through expeditions but rather allows expeditions to support and accelerate the development taking place by community leaders in our project areas.

Field Intern

Our CHOICE Field teams are usually looking for a unique and specific skill set that can meet their current needs. If you have a desire to serve a Field Internship for CHOICE, and you meet the needs and requirements outlined below, we invite you to apply. We will then look at the current needs of our country teams and advise you on what is available.

Language: If your desire is to serve in a Latin American country, you must be fluent in Spanish. If your desire is to serve either in Nepal or Kenya, English speakers will do fine

Funding: All our field internships are self-funded – Interns are required to either find a sponsor of their internship or self-fund the expenses associated with airfare, food and lodging, transportation, and food. Sometimes our field teams can help interns with lodging.

Culture: All interns are required to learn, understand, and respect the country’s culture that they will be serving in

Vetting process: All applicants are required to fill out a CHOICE Internship application and be vetted by personal interviews both at our headquarters in West Jordan and by video conference with our In-Country Director of the country where the internship will take place.

Health: All applicants would need to ensure that their healthcare needs are taken care of and that they have sufficient resources available to provide any healthcare in the event of illness and/or accident while in the country.

Passport: A valid US passport is required. Interns are required to attain a VISA from the country they are traveling to and that it be valid throughout the stay.

Immunizations: Your international travel immunizations need to be current and reflect the requirements of the country you are traveling to.

Liability: Applicant assumes all liability for travel and stay in the foreign country and will need to sign a liability release form that releases CHOICE Humanitarian of any personal or property liability.

A Sample of Duties and Responsibilities: May assist with a variety of projects, including impact investing and economic development. Projects that require business and finance skills, including financial modeling and creating business plans, are normally an ideal skill set for an internship position. Other responsibilities may include fundraising, photography, videography, marketing, and assisting with office operations. Interns need to be open to performing other tasks as determined by the local leadership of the organization. Skills related to healthcare, education, engineering, and the environment could also be considered.

Specific Skills: Many of our field centers have unique and specific skills they are looking for. These tend to vary depending on the country and their needs. If you have a unique skill set and wish to be considered, please share that with us in the application process.

Decision Process: The final decision for all applicants, after the vetting process, is based on the feedback we receive from our Country Director.
