The acronym 'CHOICE' stands for the Center for Humanitarian Outreach and Intercultural Exchange. Our Mission: CHOICE Humanitarian offers solutions to the hardships of poverty in the rural villages of the world with simple technologies, self-help initiatives and public awareness.
In the rural villages of developing nations, CHOICE specializes in manpower, materials, appropriate technology, and education. CHOICE employs full-time field staff in project countries. These 'country directors' coordinate CHOICE volunteer expeditions, work with villagers on ongoing projects and evaluate village progress. On CHOICE expeditions, volunteers work side-by-side with villagers on specific projects the villagers need, want, and will be able to sustain after CHOICE participants depart. Typically, CHOICE projects include building schoolhouses, health posts, greenhouses, wells, pumps and water systems. CHOICE also provides training in literacy, health care, agriculture and small-scale enterprises.
Since 1982, CHOICE has provided guidance for thousands of development projects around the world, positively affecting tens of thousands of lives. Hundreds of CHOICE volunteer expeditions have catalyzed the success for many of these projects.
Equally important to the accomplishments of the projects themselves are the lifelong benefits the expedition volunteers take away from their experience. Participation in an expedition cultivates tolerance, selflessness, and an appreciation for service. Volunteers develop a global perspective, an outlook that lends greater insight not only into the diverse cultures of the world, but into the diversity that exists in their local communities as well. CHOICE volunteers often return from expeditions with a greater willingness to embrace the differences in their own neighborhoods. Nurturing this type of attitude creates an understanding that leads to less crime, increased cooperation among ethnic/religious groups, the exchange of ideas, and a more agreeable world overall. |
